Make a powerful phone out of a simple Symbian OS8 phone

Hi Friends,

Well, these days, everyone is writing and I thought if I could make time a bit, why should I lag behind? Why not scrap something (useful)!

I don't want to write on the ideology of life, thoughts about religions, current affairs etc but about something, that affects daily life. I would briefly write about my experience and ways that I used to systematize my life through a mobile phone.

So, here we go! What makes a phone special? I guess that a phone (Symbian or PDA) would be special if it helps you in being organized, keep reminders and notes and make sure that you can keep track of all important events and even customer follow-ups!

Which one is my favorite phone? Well, I am not a music-freak and use phones purely from a business perspective. Of all the phones that I used (starting from 3310 to i-mate PDAs), I found the popular Nokia 6600 to be the best, most stable and a 'performer' phone. Even the PDA from i-Mate fell short of features and the stability, which the 6600 provided. i-Mate almost threw up on lot of occasions, would hang and even though callers would connect, yet I won't receive those calls (not even in logs after restarting, scary, isn't it?)

Nevertheless, I tried to keep up with the PDA but finally one day, lost it to a taxi driver, in whose car I dropped it... He must have got a great price from Gaffar ! ;-)

Then came the mighty Nokia E61, perhaps the best Business Phone, anybody can have. It's my second phone, which I use as backup for all important information. I am unable to make the best use of it because some software for Nokia 3rd edition devices (6600 is a 2nd edition device) are still not available, which I think are too critical from Business' perspective. 3rd edition devices (E61, 3250, N80, N72 etc) are the latest from Nokia which use the Symbian 9.x technology.

Well here are some great tips and software, which you can use to make the cheapest Nokia OS7 or OS8 phone as the best phone for your personal and business use:

Handy Clock : From Epocware. The best software for Alarm Management... No need for setting reminders every day and waking up late when you forgot to set one! You even have the flexibility of defining your work days (by default they are Mon to Fri but for e.g. I live in UAE, where it is Sun to Thu). It also offers a world map, stop-watch, world-clock (You can see time of 4 other cities anytime... handy for people, who travel)

Psiloc e-Profiles: A software for scheduled profile management. Set different schedules and your phone will change tones and rings on its own. Set different ringtone profiles for night, evening, work hours etc. You even have the flexibility of setting a silent profile for few minutes (or more) when you are entering into a meeting and after the time expires, the phone comes back to the previous profile on its own... I used to miss a lot of calls, as I often used to forget to change the profile back to normal.

Karapuzz YaExplorer : You can use this tool to experience a Windows Explorer look on your symbian device to manage your files and folders stored in the phone or memory card. You can also use this to send files to other devices through Bluetooth or IR.

Smart Settings / Launcher: Get a Start Menu on your phone... Just click the menu and you can press from 1 to 9 to launch your favorite that you want, in just 2 clicks!

Advanced Call Manager: From WebGat Inc. You can get rid of your usual Voice Mail and replace it with this highly customizable software, which would let you define as many conditions and responses as you want. Send SMS when you reject calls, record calls in answering machine, play your favorite music, etc. No charges for retrieval and no monthly charges!

Handy Safe: From Epocware. Use this tool to keep your confidential information, such as Credit/Debit Card Numbers, bank account numbers, Online Banking, passwords, PINs, etc, which can be handy in different needs and in remebering passwords. This will also help in case of an emergency- Imagine a situation, where you have lost your wallet and need to block your cards and don't have the numbers!

Ultimate Voice Recorder: In case you want to record calls for reference or have business needs that make it necessary and important to record calls, then you should go for either Total Recall (Killer Mobile Inc) or Ultimate Voice Recorder. There are many other applications in the market but these are beep-free recorders.

With all the above tools, you can turn any basic symbian OS8 series phone into a powerful business phone, customized to provide maximum business value. I did with the basic Nokia 6600 and trust me, I don't want to give it up now.
